I have read many novels that are "teen" books marketed for adults. Harry Potter falls into that category, having widespread appeal with adults. However, rarely have I read an "adult" book marketed for teens. The China Garden falls squarely in that camp. Why, you ask? Because the novel is so well written, so infused with higher-level English, and so draped with historical and mythical context that the typical teen reader might find it difficult to approach. However, literary teen readers and adults alike may find this novel near the top of their all-time best reads.

The story follows 17 year-old Clare as she joins her mother to work on an old English estate called Ravensmere. Odd things begin happening almost immediately, particularly in the form of strange visions. Clare slowly begins to realize that her destiny, and that of local bad-boy biker Mark, are intertwined with Ravensmere and one another - like it or not. Clare slowly unravels the mystery while wrestling with ambivalent feelings toward Mark, her mother, the estate, and her place in the world. The reveal is so unusual that most readers will fail to see it coming.

In The China Garden, Ms. Berry produced a truly outstanding paranormal romance many years before that genre exploded, so this novel has been largely forgotten. Treat yourself and give it a try. Although slow at times and dense with backstory, this novel is well worth the read!

The China Garden Liz Berry 9780380732289 Books Reviews

This book is great. The story is so rich and full of deep characters. I love this book so very much.
This book was recommended to two friends of mine who are librarians. I'm so glad they sent it my way! It was a quick read, but it is definitely a story I could read over and over again. Mystery, romance, and a touch of the supernatural all combine to form a page turning story. I don't want to spoil any of the plot points nor can I express it better than my fellow reviews, but I just had to say how wonderful this book is - no matter how old you are!
I read this book when I was a kid and I am happy to finally nab a copy!
This wasn't masterfully written, but it was frequently breathtaking, and what a fascinating world she creates!

She combines the fated feeling almost of a horror story - "once you enter, you can't leave" - with a romantic story seasoned with ancient Celtic customs and standing stones.

The authenticity, completeness, intricacy, and creativity of her world makes this book well worth the read. If you have any interest in Celtic mysticism, ancient indigenous religions, or heroes tall, dark, and enigmatic, you must read this book. Very satisfying and thought-provoking, exciting, and intriguing.
This has been a favorite of mine since I first discovered it on a bookstore shelf in my early teens. When that old paperback finally began to show its age, I decided I really needed a new copy, hardcover if possible. I'm so happy I purchased this so I can revisit the world of Ravensmere and all the character I have always enjoyed. This is a sweet teen romance with interesting supernatural elements and a fabulous setting in the English countryside. Highly recommended.
The China Garden has log been one of my favorite books. This book not only has a supernatural element but also contains captivating character development. The plot of this book is like nothing else I have read. I will not spoil the plot but will encourage you to go read this book if you love supernatural stories.
Clare is about to embark on her university studies, prodded into business by her boyfriend rather than into medicine or history which are her greater interests. She is surprised by her mother's plan to return to her home village to be a private nurse. While her mother does not want her to go, Clare convinces her to let her come as well. When she arrives she is astonished that everyone knows not only her mother, but also knows about her and are jubilant in her return. There is mention of mysterious Guardians and Clare discovers a locked China Garden on the estate which draws her in. The estate manager wants her gone so he can implement his vision for the estate as a nuclear dump site and there is a handsome motorcyclist that gives her the shivers. Will Clare be able to solve the mysteries of Ravensmere in time? I found this to be a delightful English romance/mystery/mystic tale and it kept my interest throughout the story.
