Tessa lives with her father in an apartment over his bookstore. At an auction, she encourages him to bid on a particular lot of old books. When they look through it they find an odd book and a scrap of tapestry of a unicorn. Tessa is drawn to this picture, despite the fact that this is a much more violent depiction than is traditionally seen. When she pulls a loose thread, something very unexpected occurs. Flashing back to the past, we see a girl very much like Tessa in the forest, having a chance encounter with the William, the second son of the local lord. There is evil in the forest in the form of a witch called Grey Lily who has figured out how to steal the threads of life in order to make herself young and beautiful. Also involved are the Three Fates, also known as the Norn, responsible for the tapestry of life. They are searching for the one who has stolen several life threads, which threatens to unbalance their weaving. Grey Lily enchants Will and binds him to her tapestry as the unicorn. Tessa unknowingly releases him. Along with her best friend, they try figure out what is going on, while Grey Lily plots to return Will to the tapestry and regain her youth. Not only are they plagued by Grey Lily, the Norns, having seen the release of one of their missing threads, go after Tessa, thinking she is responsible for stealing them. Tessa must find a way to restore order before her life is changed forever by the Fates or ended by Grey Lily. She must also deal with her conflicting feelings for William. This was a charming young adult fantasy with some very creative ideas and good execution of the story.

Warped Maurissa Guibord 9780385738910 Books Reviews

Gripping and original, WARPED is definitely a captivating novel, beautifully detailed, with a refreshing uniqueness all its own.

Not a unicorn tale, although one does play a part in the story, as does a dragon, and in a way some time travel of sorts and a most distasteful witch/crown. Warped is a dangerous and romantic read, with a clever mix of medieval times and modern day, featuring mythical creatures and the powerful sorcery of the "Fates".

The characters are masterfully written, vivid and multidimensional. This fantasy is more than what I'd consider to be a typical teen paranormal book. Exquisitely fleshed out, this tall tale is full of magic, sacrifice, suspense, mystery, desire, intrigue, seduction, betrayal and of course action.

Upon finishing WARPED, I checked out Maurissa Guibord's website and I found myself a bit bummed to find no evidence that a sequel is planned. Although the story does end cleanly for the most part and a second book inst necessary, I'm not quite ready for Tessa and Will's journey to be over and from the Epilogue, there is a definite hint, that there could still be more to "unravel". So here is my plead Mrs. Guibord... Your debut was mesmerizing!... PLEASE give us more!
This was a great story. Tessa begins everything when she and her father attend an auction and get more than they bargained for. Thrown in with a box of books for her father's bookstore is an old book and a tapestry. The tapestry calls to her. She touches it and has strange dreams and visions of a past life. When she pulls a thread, the unicorn in the foreground of the tapestry becomes a young man who had been bound in the tapestry since 1511.

Will de Chauncy became the victim of a witch who gathered the thread of his life and wove him into the spell. The Fates knew that someone had stolen some threads of life and had been looking for them for 500 years. Because Tessa pulled the thread, they are blaming her and threatening all she loves if she doesn't return the threads.

Meanwhile, the actual thief is Lila Gerome. She has spent the years since she trapped Will living life with continual youth and beauty. She is determined to get the tapestry and her book back.

Tessa and Will are facing enemies from both sides and have to fight to carve out the life that they want.

I loved the language and descriptions in this book. Tessa was a thoroughly modern girl who doesn't believe in fate or witches or time travel. She adjusts really well even though her father thinks she is acting out because he has a new girlfriend. Will is a wonderfully sympathetic character too who is very bewildered at his change in circumstance. He is also handsome, smart, and brave.

I recommend this book to all lovers of fantasy and romance.
Warped opens with Tessa and her dad at an auction house bidding on some books and what seems like a random tapestry. After winning the bid she starts to examine the tapestry and the book that was wrapped in it and her life takes a sudden plunge for the strange as she starts seeing visions and having dreams of a different time.

I thoroughly enjoyed this book. For the past two days I’ve been trying to figure out just what I enjoyed, I can’t pinpoint it exactly but here are a few things
+ I enjoyed the telling of two stories in two different times. I’ve always enjoyed books from other centuries and while I’m not a fan of flashbacks these time flashes were wonderfully crafted.
+ My imagination ran wild. As I’ve started reading critically I’ve noticed a lot of books where the narrative tells me what’s going on instead of showing. I’ve found it distracting to the point where I need to put the book down and walk away, this is not a problem with Warped. In fact, it was quite the opposite - I had to stay up all night just to finish!
+ I loved that it kept me up all night just trying to figure out what will happen next.
+ The story touches on the Norns (Fates) and I don’t recall ever reading a book with Norse mythology.

I only had one complaint but it’s such a minor one that I didn’t want to bring it up. Right from the start we learn that there are seven missing threads (lives) and the Norns (Fates) want them back. Finding those seven threads, in one book, didn’t allow room for a lot of character development (minor characters) and while I enjoyed a lot of the characters, I wanted them to have more screen time - especially Opal and a few of the lost threads. However, it wasn’t a huge loss to the story and I’m looking forward to reading more from Maurissa.
